hair appoinment prep

"He who is best prepared can best serve his moment of inspiration.”

- Samuel Taylor Coleridge

2-3 Days Before

Use a search engine to gather hair inspiration like Pinterest, Instagram or Google. We have found a simple "curly hairstyles" search can be a tad overwhelming, so we recommend searching specifics. Searches like "short curly hair styles", "curly cuts for volume" or "curly haircuts with bangs" will help kick start your own hair inspiration board.

Hair Prep

One of the best pieces of advice I can give anyone whose about to head to the salon for an appointment is this: Wear your hair as close to how you wear it 80% of the time. With one exeption! (Yep just ONE!) If you normally wear your hair out of your face ie: ponytail, bun or clip, this creates a disadvantage to your stylist. Why?! Good question. We want to give our stylists a good foundation to see the big picture. Of course, if we wear our hair in a pony tail, bun or are a wash and go sort of person, we should totally mention it! But for us curly girls, coming to the salon with our hair how we normally wear it will give us a starting point in our navigation.

Asses Inward

“Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty."

- David Hume

It will prove to be useful to take a few minutes to note some things we want out of our hair appointment. And if your thinking... "But that's the stylist job", I won't argue... too much ;)

Great communication skills may automatically be attributed to anyone providing a personal service and our hairstylists may know a lot about our personal lives. But taking a few minutes to really think about our own desires or goals with our overall look may help. Are you feeling bored lately? Or having trouble really nailing down a proper blow dry at home? Our lives are busy and we are often juggling many things so reflecting inward can connect us closer to congruence. For example, here are some questions to ask yourself before your hair appointment:

  • Am I completely satisfied with my overall look?

  • Do I truly feel confident how with how I present myself?

  • If I was brave enough, I would try __________________?

  • Do I have any hair or beauty questions about what I've seen on social media?

  • I wish I could style my hair like ____________________?

  • Is my hair lacking shine?

  • Are my curls not as "curly" as they used to be?

  • I'm new to wearing my hair naturally curly/wavy and I'm struggling, can I find a curly stylist?

Make a note of the answers in your phone and bring it with you to your hair appointment for some mad rad conversation. This quick guide can also be saved, printed and brought with you to your own salon appointment to help navigate the conversation with your personal stylist.

"Beauty can be consoling, disturbing, sacred, profane; it can be exhilarating, appealing, inspiring, chilling. It can affect us in an unlimited variety of ways. Yet it is never viewed with indifference: beauty demands to be noticed; it speaks to us directly like the voice of an intimate friend. If there are people who are indifferent to beauty, then it is surely because they do not perceive it."

-Roger Scruton
